Vitamin D: an essential nutrient for overall well-being

Vitamin D is an important nutrient. It’s the only one of the 13 vitamins that can be made by the human body—but you need enough sunlight to make it, which may be tough to get if you spend significant time indoors, or use sunblock to protect your skin from harmful sun rays.

There are two types of vitamin D: D2 (ergocalciferol) and D3 (cholecalciferol). At Best Nest Wellness we use D3 for our formulas, since it is the type your body makes.

Vitamin D deficiency is more common than you might think, which can be a concern if you are trying to conceive.

Vitamin D and male fertility health

Recent scientific studies have looked into any association between vitamin D and male fertility, and the findings are interesting.

Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to poor sperm quality, reduced sperm count, and impaired sperm motility. One study “...revealed a clinically important effect, indicated by the two- to threefold higher median total sperm count and sperm concentration in vitamin D–deficient men treated with vitamin D and calcium compared with those in the placebo group.”

Moreover, this nutrient may play a role in maintaining hormonal balance and supporting reproductive function.

Studies like the above look at the correlation between vitamin D deficiency and fertility. But what about the benefits of vitamin D for male fertility—is there any evidence that it can help?

It turns out that a wealth of studies support the hypothesis that vitamin D can support vibrant health when trying to conceive.

One study showed a direct correlation: “In summary…The active form of vitamin D may enhance sperm motility by promoting the activation of the sperm mitochondrial respiratory chain to produce ATP…”

One meta-analysis systematically reviewed 5 other studies on vitamin D supplementation and sperm health for infertile men. It concluded: “Vitamin D supplementation may support sperm motility, progressive sperm motility, and morphology in infertile men. Vitamin D supplementation may be considered in managing male fertility...”

    Increasing vitamin D

Embrace sunlight exposure and outdoor time — essential for vitamin D synthesis. Incorporate vitamin D-rich foods like fatty fish and fortified dairy products into your diet.

We know—easier said than done, right?

If you find yourself unable to consistently get your daily fill, vitamin D supplementation is an easy and convenient way to support your overall well-being and your fertility journey.

As for absorption, a number of factors and lifestyle choices impact vitamin D absorption, including obesity and specific medical conditions. So as you’re embracing healthy habits, like a balanced diet and regular physical activity, be sure to include your doctor in these discussions.

Can I get enough vitamin D from sunlight alone?

While sunlight is a great source, factors like location, season, and sun protection can affect vitamin D synthesis. It’s more common than you might think to have a vitamin D deficiency, so if you suspect it’s an issue for you, supplementation is definitely an option to consider.
