Methylation & MTHFR

Methylation & MTHFR

By Dr. Madhavi Gupta, M.D.

“Without methylation there would be no life as we know it.” - C. Cooney

A quick definition:

Methylation is the production of methyl groups which your body needs for a vibrantly healthy life. It is the “central control dial of life.” Methyl groups turn your body systems on and off and help it function properly.

Why methylated vitamins matter:
Your body takes the food you eat and converts it into methyl groups. This takes time and energy and, sometimes, your body can’t do this properly, especially if you are under stress. But, you can support or even bypass this process. When you take methylated vitamins, your body doesn’t have to work extra hard to change the vitamins or food you eat into a version with methyl groups. That’s because methylated vitamins come with methyl groups attached that are ready to go.

Best Nest Wellness’ supplements are made with methylated vitamins like methylfolate (B9), methylcobalamin (B12), and pyridoxal-5-phosphate (B6), the active form of vitamins found naturally in your body that come with attached methyl groups. Having extra methyl groups can help your body work efficiently without wearing you down.

But what are the benefits?

Proper methylation compensates for the DNA variations you were born with. It is one of the tools you have to change your genetic destiny. Optimal methylation can lead to:

  • Healthy neuro-development
  • Impressive memory
  • Happy mood
  • Sharp focus
  • Restful sleep
  • Boundless energy
  • Boosted immunity

It is important to all aspects of your physical, mental, and emotional health via hormone and neurotransmitter production and gene expression (turning genes on and off).

With poor methylation,
your brain, gut, and liver can be affected. Many consequences are attributed to it, as well:

  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog
  • Mild depression
  • Mild anxiety
  • And more

Stress, lack of sleep, and age are some of the reasons why your methyl groups may be depleted. In addition, if you have the MTHFR gene variant (affects approximately 60% of people) then your body is not making enough enzymes for methylation. As a result, you have fewer methyl groups in your body ready to be called into action. So, it is critically important for you to take methylated vitamins to boost your stores up.

You can find methylated vitamins in our entire multivitamin line including Best Nest Multi+ line, Mama Bird Prenatal Multi+ line, and the Ready, Set, Go Fertility line. If you need even more methyl support, we’ve got you covered with Smart Folate.
